You may check if you are able to view the Port Settings tab in the Device Managing director. If so, yous tin can brand the change there.

Thanks for this answer, but the problem is that XP Habitation Edition doesn't have such a tab in Device Director. Manifestly XP Professional does, but that is non available.  I posted the Question hoping somebody knows another approach. Yesterday I was given one hint to download a little virtual port direction utility called XPort, and that might help. Don't know yet, but the write up ceratinly seems to exist on-target:

But it certainly seems that Microsoft should have thought of this themselves!

To modify port settings

1. Open Device Manager.
2. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
3. Right-click the port for which you desire to change settings, and so click Properties.
4. On the Port Settings tab, brand the appropriate changes.
